maleic acid | |||||
maleic acid, also known as maleic acid (chemical formula HO2CCHCHCO2H), is a dicarboxylic acid, that is, an organic compound containing two carboxylic acid functional groups. Maleic acid and fumaric acid (fumaric acid) are cis-trans isomers of each other. Maleic acid is commonly used to prepare fumaric acid, maleic acid's anhydride is maleic anhydride, and its acid anhydride compared to maleic acid, maleic acid has fewer applications. Maleic acid and its acid anhydride are not approved food additives, but the United States and the European Union have limited permission to use maleic anhydride in packaging materials directly or indirectly in contact with food, and the United States also allows the use of maleic acid as an acid-base concoction in cosmetics. | |||||
