Zirconium dioxide (chemical formula ZrO2) is the main oxide of zirconium, usually white odorless, tasteless crystals, insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid. It usually contains a small amount of hafnium dioxide. The chemical properties are not active, but the properties of high melting point, high resistivity, high refractive index and low thermal expansion coefficient make it an important high temperature resistant material, ceramic insulation material and ceramic sunshade is also the main raw material for artificial drilling. The band gap is about 5-7eV.

Production method and use |
Production method |
Zircon and caustic soda melt at 650ºC, hot water leach the molten body, silicon in the form of sodium silicate and sodium zirconate separation. Then treated with sulfuric acid, zirconium sulfate solution is obtained, and after further removing impurities, ammonia water is added to precipitate zirconium hydroxide. Zirconia chloride is obtained by adding hydrochloric acid to dissolve zirconia hydroxide. After evaporation and concentration, cooling and crystallization, grinding and roasting, zirconia is obtained. Sol-gel method in zirconium alkoxide such as ZrO(C3) is mainly used in piezoelectric ceramic products, domestic ceramics, refractory materials and precious metal melting zirconium bricks, zirconium tubes, crucibles and so on. It is also used in the production of steel and non-ferrous metals, optical glass and zirconia fibers. It is also used in ceramic pigments, electrostatic coatings and baking paints. Used in epoxy resins to increase corrosion of heat-resistant saline. |
